読了。私が読んだのはアメリカ版であって、イギリス版（原著）では、タイトルが Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone であることを知る。Sorcerer が賢者と訳されたのではなくて、Philosopherが賢者と訳された、ということになる。だとすると、さらに疑問がわく。

1. なぜ原著の Philosopher をアメリカでは Sorcerer にしたのか？
2. 映画ではなぜ原著の Philosopher ではなくて Sorcerer にしたのか？
3. イギリス版とアメリカ版に違いがあるのか？

そこで、検索してみた。1番目の疑問に対しては、Movie Chatterに

In the USA "philosopher" doesn't have quite the same meaning as it does in British English.

In American English usage, a philosopher is simply a wise person, a deep thinker, in the manner of people like Socrates and Kant. It has nothing to do with magic.

So in America, the title was changed to "Sorcerer's Stone" so it would convey the same meaning that "Philosopher's Stone" would to someone familiar with the British flavour of the English language.

とある。ところが、これに対して「石を作ったのは wise and deep な人なのだから、philosopher を wise man の意味だとしてもなにも問題ないのではないか？」と返されるが、それに対しては「アメリカでタイトルを Philosopher's stone にしてしまうと、magical connotation がなくなってしまい読者を混乱させる」としている。その後も「そもそも、Philosopher's Stone はヨーロッパでは有名で…」「そうなのか？」といった議論が続いたりして、ちょっと面白い。

　2番目の疑問に対しては、直接の答えはみつからなかったけど、アメリカで上映する際に、アメリカの本のタイトルにあわせたのだろう。Chamber of Secretsに

I don't get this either. Why did they make the name of the movie the Sorcerer's Stone but used British Actors, landscape, adn accents?

という疑問を書き込んでいる人もいる。

　3番目の疑問については、Chamber of Secretsに

I agree with Weatherby...it's like releasing a CD of a band which has 5 tracks less in the US version than the European version...but I'm not saying that any chapters were removed, just edited because of the spellings, e.g. colour becomes color, apartment becomes flat, elevator becomes lift, and so on...

とあるように、スペルを変えたという程度の違いのようだ。

_ パート１は持っているので、パート２からパート４まで買うと、合計2202円。パート１〜４のボックスセットを買うと2356円。つまり、154円の差でパート１が手に入ることになるのだけど、パート１を2冊もいらないし、どうしよう。154円という金額がどうも微妙な金額なだけに迷ってしまう。ブックオフに持っていっても、そんなに高く買ってくれるとは思えないけど、一度聞いてみるかな。
